The Alumni Association of GZIST ranked the 30th among national private undergraduate colleges and universities in June 2021.

Located in the south of Maofeng Mountain scenic area in Baiyun District of Guangzhou, Guangzhou Institute of Science and Technology (GZIST) is a full-time university approved by the Ministry of Education.

GZIST was first established as the private Tianhe Vocational School in Dec. 2000. In April 2006, with the approval by the Ministry of Education, it became an undergraduate school attached to Guangdong Polytechnic Normal University. In Dec. 2011, it passed the assessment for the bachelor’s degree conferment. On June 30, 2020, GZIST was officially approved as a private-owned independent undergraduate college. It was one of the first private undergraduate colleges that confer postgraduate degrees in Guangdong in 2021 and among the first private undergraduate colleges that recruit and cultivate postgraduate students jointly with public universities in 2022. GZIST is the only private undergraduate college in Guangdong that has scientific research platforms under Department of Science and Technology, Department of Education, Human Resources and Social Security Department and Social Sciences Association of Guangdong.

Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, GZIST adheres to the socialist orientation in running schools, fully implements the Party’s education policy, and implements the fundamental task of fostering morality and cultivating talents. With its distinctive characteristics and strengths in engineering education, GZIST has become a multi-disciplinary university, merging engineering, business management, economics, literature, art and other disciplines into one integration. Based in Guangdong province, oriented towards south China and catering to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, it is aimed to cultivate high-quality practice-oriented talents with the unity of knowledge and action, a high degree of information literacy, strong applicable and innovative abilities and an international vision.

The institute sets up 12 schools including School of Intelligent Manufacturing and Electrical Engineering, School of Computer Science and Engineering, School of Architectural Engineering, School of Business Administration, School of Economics and Management, School of Foreign Languages, School of Art and Design, School of Music and Dance, School of Humanities and Education, School of Marxism (School of General Education), School of International Education, School of Continuing Education. In addition, there are 3 industrial schools including School of Zhongxing Telecommunication Engineering, School of Bluedon Cyberspace Security, School of Intelligent Manufacturing and Robot Industry. There are currently 45 undergraduate programs, 21 of which are engineering programs. The total number of full-time enrolled students amounts to 21,700. There are currently over 800 teaching staff in school including 151 professors, 312 associate professors and 150 with doctor’s degree. Experts, doctors, scholars with overseas education experience, professionally-titled teachers and specialists from enterprises also join the faculty as instructors or counsellors.

The institute sticks to the strategy of “college-enterprise cooperation, industry-education integration” in its education and talent cultivation, deepens its talent training model reform and implements “invigorating through innovation” and “quality enhancing” projects. There are currently 2 key provincial disciplines, 1 state first-class discipline, 3 provincial first-class disciplines, 80 provincial quality engineering programs, 65 provincial invigorating scientific researches and 70 education department funded industry-education collaborated cultivation programs underway in school. Furthermore, the school is home to 4 provincial feature specialties, 6 provincial comprehensive discipline reform pilot projects, 2 provincial practice-oriented talent cultivation exemplary specialties, 3 provincial talent-cultivation model innovation pilot zones, 2 provincial exemplary practice-oriented talent cultivation bases, 3 provincial experimental education demonstration centers, 6 provincial college student practice education bases, 2 provincial outstanding talent-cultivation programs, 3 provincial teaching groups and 1 practice-oriented talent cultivation course construction project. It offers 1 provincial first-class course, 1 provincial “golden course”, 1 provincial excellent video public course, 1 provincial excellent resource sharing course and 2 provincial online public courses. A provincial excellent textbook has been published and a provincial industrial school has been established. 138 laboratories and 101 practice education bases on and off campus have been built with 120 million yuan worth of teaching and research facilities and equipment. Over 400 enterprises have worked with the school, 16 of which were based on campus.

GZIST adheres to the principle of open education and endeavors to increase international education collaboration, having established exchanges with 28 higher-learning institutes at home and abroad. It sets up School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and builds “Innovation Valley of Maofeng Region” in the aim of promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and academic competition on campus. GZIST students have been awarded 300 or so national awards, over 1500 provincial awards in the past five years. In 2019, GZIST was awarded the second prize in provincial teaching achievement and won the second place in the Provincial Football League and the sixth place in the national final of College Football League. In 2021, it was awarded the first prize in ROBOCON(China University Robot Competition). The multi-integration and coordination education model (three classes integration, in and outside school integration, industry-education-research integration) proposed and promoted by GZIST is awarded the second prize for 2019 Guangdong teaching achievement appraisal.

While adhering to the combination of industry, education and research and the integration of science and education, GZIST highlights applied research, researches oriented toward the university itself and collaborative innovation, which helps convert advances in science and technology into actual productive forces. Tremendous achievements have been scored over the past 20 years. The institute has built one provincial engineering technology research center, one economic consultation research center on rural revitalization of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, one Greater Bay Area enterprise personnel management research institute under the Department of Education of Guangdong, one postdoctoral research center under Human Resources and Social Security Department of Guangdong, one BIM engineering technology center for cooperation between Guangdong and Hong Kong, one economic research center for rural revitalization in the Greater Bay Area led by Guangdong Social Sciences Association, one talent management academy for enterprises in the Greater Bay Area led by the Department of Education of Guangdong Province, and 58 teaching and researching teams in the form of teacher studios. In recent years, the teaching staff of the institute have undertaken more than 130 projects at and above the provincial or department levels and some 200 vertical teaching and research projects. In addition, the staff have also published over 1,500 academic theses and 110 textbooks and monographs. Furthermore, as the institute has always put great emphases on applied research and the development and transformation of new technologies, products and techniques, achievements in applied research area have seen a steady growth. For instance, the institute has been approved as one of the intellectual property pilot bases in Guangzhou. Apart from that, a total of 213 authorized patents have been obtained by students and teachers, including 11 patents, 14 software copyrights, 14 accredited high-tech products, and 7 transferred scientific and technological achievements, 3 of which have realized industrialization. Last but not the least, the research of the integration and application of industrial robots has been applied to production and over 500 products have been sold to some 20 higher and secondary vocational schools in 12 provinces and municipalities, realizing a total of output value of more than 50 million yuan. 11 production-learning-research cooperative education programs have been approved by the Ministry of Education as the first of its kind. GZIST has provided service for government, industries, enterprises, business parks, institutes and schools of Baiyun and Zeicheng districts of Guangzhou and Shixing, Boluo, Wengyuan, making its contribution for social and economic development and rural revitalization. Breakthroughs have been made in various areas. E-commerce live-streaming bases have been built with over 2000 students and teachers participating and provided services for 300 brands. One center and two bases have been established with Siqian town in Shixing, helping selling nearly 600 thousand yuan’s worth of local agricultural products with the student live-streaming sales promotion. The school devised the reform solution for Zeicheng District’s supply and marketing co-op and received funding of 800 thousand yuan.

The institute abides to the principles of governing the institute by law strictly, implements the management of big-department system and integrates moral and political education into every aspect of the entire education. Its steadily improving teaching quality and education quality has earned the institute a good reputation. The institute enrolls students from 15 provinces and regions across the country, with an annual admission rate of 100 percent. In the past five years, the final employment rate has remained above 97%, ranking high in Guangdong province.  It has cultivated 50,000 high-quality application-oriented professionals, and has been rated as the advanced unit of provincial employment and entrepreneurship for many consecutive years.  

Nestling under Maofeng Mountain and being only 200 meters away from the exit of Guangzhou-Heyuan Highway, Baiyun Campus of GZIST is beautiful in environment and convenient in transportation with 4 bus lines direct to the downtown. With all-inclusive sports facilities, complete logistical support and intelligent management in student community, it is a preferred place for young students to further their studies.

GZIST launches a new journey in the new era. At this new historical starting point, guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and with building strong moral character as its fundamental task, the institute will unswervingly follow the road of cultivating practice-oriented talents by promoting integration between industry and education and cooperation between enterprises and the school, highlight the characteristics of emerging engineering education, and promote the coordinated development of all disciplines, so as to reach the set goal of building itself into a top well-known application-oriented independent undergraduate college in Guangdong province.
