Professor Tian Xiangbin, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages gave a lecture on “The Promotion of Excellent Chinese Traditional Culture Abroad” on December 9, 2021 at the invitation of Planning and Research Department. Close to 500 students from all majors attended the lecture in No. 2 Academic Lecture Hall.
Dean Tian talked about three typical ways of promoting excellent Chinese traditional culture abroad: cultural heritage of overseas Chinese, cultural exchanges of international students abroad, and language and culture promotion of Confucius Institute.
Firstly, overseas Chinese, also known as ethnic Chinese, refer to people with Chinese ancestry living outside China. Dean Tian said that those overseas Chinese tend to be more patriotic and have a greater sense of national identity. As a result, they are keen to spread Chinese folk arts with a long history in foreign countries, including local opera, lion and dragon dances, and calligraphy, etc. Secondly, as active carriers of Chinese culture, international students have an inevitable responsibility to tell Chinese stories and convey Chinese voices. They can let foreign friends experience the unique charm of Chinese culture directly by speaking Chinese and singing Chinese songs, dressing up in Chinese style and making typical Chinese dishes, helping foreigners have a better understanding of China and a love for Chinese culture. Finally, Confucius Institutes, as non-profit educational institutions established through Sino-foreign cooperation, are the fastest and most effective way to promote Chinese culture and carry out Chinese language teaching. It has also been proven that the flourishing development of Confucius Institutes overseas has not only strengthened the cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world, but also promoted the diversity of cultures in the world.
