Professor Zeng Huilan from Jinan University was invited by the Department of Planning and Research to give a lecture on “Medicine and Bioethics” in No. 2 Academic Lecture Hall, and close to 500 students from all majors of the university listened to the lecture.
Professor Zeng is the chief physician, doctor and postgraduate supervisor of the Department of Hematology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University, and has long been engaged in the comprehensive treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome and lymphoma and prognosis and quality of life of myeloproliferative tumors. Professor Zeng explained the close relationship between life and medicine from three aspects. First, there are many opinions on the origin of life, and the known theories include creationism, cosmic life, non-biological origin, and chemical origin. These theories reveal the mystery and complexity of the origin of life. So far, we are still far from unraveling the ancient mystery of the origin of life. Similarly, the development of human life is also complex, involving hardship and pain. Thus, medicine, the art and science of disease prevention and treatment, was born. Then, Professor Zeng pointed out that "life first" is the ultimate reason for the existence of medicine. The so-called "life" includes three aspects: the length of survival, the dignity of life and the value of life, which requires that the doctor's duty should not only relieve suffering, prevent illnesses and protect health but also shift the emphasis on healing and high technology to preventive health care. Finally, Professor Zeng explained the contradictory relationship between ethics and medicine by analyzing cases such as " Thalidomide ", "Genetic Engineering" and "Organ Transplantation".
This lecture, closely related to life, contains novel and interesting content and plays a great role in enhancing our students' respect for life consciousness, outlook, medical views as well as values.
